| 0 - 3 Months : Sensory Development |
As regards to vision, your newborn is able to see clearly up to 8” away. In evolutionary terms they are able to see just enough for their survival, from the breast or feeding bottle to their mother's or caregiver's face. Indeed immediately from birth, when feeding, you will find that newborns gaze attentively at the human face.
Although born with relatively poor vision, from the moment of birth your newborns sight develops rapidly and by 5-6 weeks they are able to focus both eyes on an object and has begun to prefer more complex designs, colours and shapes over plain dull things. From this time they also develop the ability to be able to track movement; if you move your hand from side to side over their head you will see that they can follow it with their eyes.
At this crucial stage you need to give your newborn toys that awaken the senses. Newborns are born with an innate preference for colours and shapes so they will benefit from toys and rattles in bold, primary colours, bright patterns, interesting fabrics and soothing music/sounds.
